The clock is ticking on a new deal with the Hawthorn AFL club.
That’s according to independent Bass MP Rebekah Pentland who says re-signing the club to a new contract beyond 2025 is critical for the economy of the state’s north.
Ms Pentland is pointing to the departure of the Kangaroos from Tasmania as an example of how quickly things can change and is warning that other states like Queensland are circling and looking to maximise their relationship with the club.
She says she’s spoken with the Premier on multiple occasions about the urgency of a new deal.
“We know Cairns wants to expand its own deal with the Hawks and the Queensland government is prepared to spend money to make it happen,” Ms Pentland said.
“It would be a disaster if the Hawks left Launceston.
“While next year’s fixtures, including the Friday night clash with the Giants, will be brilliant, there are no guarantees beyond 2025.
“If we don’t lock in a deal soon, other cities will swoop.
“UTAS Stadium is the best boutique ground in Australia. It would be embarrassing if it was left without premium football content.”
