Launceston councillor Dr George Razay says approval of developments like fast food outlets across the city should also be considered from a health perspective..

It comes after Launceston Council gave planning approval for the city’s fourth McDonald’s near a children’s school on Invermay Road at Mowbray.

The outlet will operate 24/7 and is expected to create around 100 jobs.

Councillor Razay is one of three councillors who expressed concern over the development but says the approval process is not focused on health responsibilities.

“They seldom consider the impact of these outlets on the health and wellbeing of the community,” Cr Razay said.

“They mainly look at the economic benefits, whether they satisfy zoning and local planning and other requirements.

“But obesity rate in Tasmania now is 55 percent and that is higher than the national average.

“Tasmania is the sickest state in Australia. More than half of all Tasmanians have at least one chronic health problem like heart disease, stroke or diabetes.

“When I look at the figures and what Australia used to look like years ago, what’s happened in the last 30 years? The number of fast food outlets has increased dramatically.

“Now, chronic illness isn’t all about diet, but it’s a significant factor

“I really believe the time has come that we should consider the impact on community health and well being, and the number of outlets and their proximity to schools.”
