The future of a Dutch Elm tree at York Park will be decided by Launceston councillors.
Normally council staff would decide its fate, but given the sensitive nature of the issue being one which has drawn strong community interest and opinion, there’ll first be a workshop followed by a decision by councillors at a meeting on September 5.
Dutch Elms are threatened globally due to a fungal disease which has decimated their numbers. This one is a healthy specimen believed to date back to the 1940s or ’50s.

As it stands, the tree has been recommended for removal to make way for redevelopment of UTAS stadium.
