The cost of repair work so far to Launceston’s historic City Park fountain has been put at close to $100,000 but that’s less than half what the final bill is expected to be.
It comes as a report indicates the Children’s Jubilee Fountain was only a few years away from the scrapheap when it was brought in for repairs earlier this year.
The council chose not to put the work out to tender, due to a lack of qualified contractors and a desire to keep all of the fountain’s components in Tasmania.
The contract for the work went to Glasgow Engineering.
A council report states the final bill could be as much as a quarter of a million dollars.
