Local government seeks funding for security cam expansion

Local councils across Tasmania are looking to secure close to four million dollars in state government funding for more security cameras.

The funding, which includes close to two million dollars for around 500 new cameras in regional areas, would also provide police with improved access to the footage through a statewide video management system.

The Local Government Association says the program would help eliminate issues associated with individual local systems in a bid to help with community safety.

Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood has previously backed measures such as increased surveillance for Tasmania Police to combat issues like youth crime in the Brisbane Street Mall.
